Purpose
This program will support expenses associated with learning a new technique from another research group at Ohio State or another institution. The program seeks to increase the portfolio of state-of-the-art techniques available to the IDI members. Therefore, it is expected that the technique is not already available within the applicant’s department or the laboratories of the applicant’s current Ohio State collaborators. Applications will be considered based on the relevance of the technique to the applicant's program and the HDMB thematic area. Awards are limited to one per laboratory and will support up to $2,500 of reagent, service, travel, or other related expenses that have specific relevance to the intent of this funding mechanism.
Proposal Evaluation
All requests for funding will be evaluated by at least one HDMB thematic program director and two additional reviewers using the following criteria:
- Significance and impact of the techniques on the portfolio of techniques available to the IDI member. What is the added benefit of acquiring the technique compared to existing techniques or approaches?
- Qualification of laboratory or company/entity where techniques will be learned. Evidence the laboratory where the technique will be learned has a solid track record of publications that used the technique. Alternatively, evidence should be provided that this technique/approach will use unique reagents not available elsewhere.
- Feasibility of the technology transfer to the applicant’s lab/group. Evidence that the applicant’s laboratory has the structure and/or personnel in place for effective transfer of the technique.
- Potential for improving competitiveness for extramural funding. Alignment of the technique with future grant applications.
