As the academic year comes to a close, we want to recognize several individuals for their recent accomplishments.

Dr. Amal Amer, professor and vice chair for translational research, Department of Microbial Infection and Immunity, College of Medicine, recently received a National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases PO1 award for her project, “Role of the non-canonical inflammasome in SARS-CoV-2-mediated pathology and coagulopathy.” This is a five-year, $13M award. Co-PIs include:

Dr. Jonathan Jacobs, associate professor, Department of Plant Pathology, College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, and IDI Discovery Theme faculty member, has been awarded a 2024-2025 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to Uruguay for his research “Investigating emerging and ongoing threats to U.S. and Uruguay cereal production.” Read more here.

Dr. Matt Sullivan, professor, Department of Microbiology, College of Arts and Sciences, and Department of Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering, College of Engineering; director, Center of Microbiome Science; co-director, IDI Microbial Communities Thematic Program, has been elected to the 2023 class of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellows for pioneering studies on viral economics to study viruses in complex communities via quantitative sample-to-sequence pipelines, and linking viruses to hosts, and studying viral impact in the marine environment. Read more here. Dr. Dan Wozniak, Samuel Saslaw Professor of Infectious Diseases and vice chair, Department of Microbial Infection and Immunity, College of Medicine; professor, Department of Microbiology, College of Arts and Sciences; and co-director, IDI Microbial Communities Thematic Program, received a 2024 President’s Research Excellence (PRE) Catalyst award for his project, “Combined Therapeutics for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (CTCARB).” Dr. Wozniak will serve as the PI. Co-PIs include Dr. Mark Mitton-Fry, associate professor, Division of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy, College and Pharmacy and co-director, IDI Microbial Communities Thematic Program; and Dr. Brian Ahmer, professor, Department of Microbial Infection and Immunity, College of Medicine.
