The National Institute of Antimicrobial Resistance Research and Education (NIAMRRE)—an organization created in response to the 2015 U.S. National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria to address antimicrobial resistance has chosen Dr. Thomas E. Wittum to serve as Chair of the NIAMRRE Advisory Council for July 2022 through June 2023, at which time he will transition to co-chairing NIAMRRE's Annual Conference Planning Committee as Ohio State will host the 2024 conference.
In his role as Advisory Council Chair, Dr. Wittum provides leadership to the council; assists with operations by providing subject matter expertise; provides input on planning, prioritization, and implementation of near-term activities and efforts; and works closely with the NIAMRRE Operations Center on various initiatives.
Dr. Wittum is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine in the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine. He also has a faculty appointment in the OSU College of Public Health's Division of Epidemiology. Tom’s research interests include infectious disease epidemiology, zoonotic infectious diseases, and antimicrobial resistance. In addition, he serves as the Co-Director of the Antimicrobial Resistance Thematic Program within the OSU Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI).
The IDI has been designated as a Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UN FAO) International Reference Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance. The IDI is one of five Reference Centers globally, the only one in the Western Hemisphere, and the only academic institution to serve in this role. Dr. Wittum will continue to lead the international AMR reference center at Ohio State as co-director of the IDI’s AMR thematic program.
