Did you know 17% of all infectious diseases are spread by insects or other arthropods? In fact, every 2 minutes a child dies from a vector-borne disease. Entomology 5605: Vector Biology and Vector-Borne Disease is an overview of the arthropod vectors that pose the greatest threats to human health. Students learn about the basic ecology and behavior of vectors, the pathogens they transmit, the diseases caused by those pathogens, and the fascinating biology behind these vector-pathogen-host interactions. Students also learn about current methods being implemented around the globe to control vector borne disease transmission, and discuss the ecological and ethical implications of those methods.
